As with quilting, woodworking offers a great opportunity to experiment with design and color. I was introduced to the possibilities of using the natural color in wood when I became interested in making pens and pencils. This evolved into using left over strips of contrasting wood which I laminated to make boxes with decorative stripes. I then discovered that yo-yo kits were available. I made several yo-yos by contrasting laminating woods into strips wide enough to produce yo-yos. |

Later it occurred to me to cut the laminated strips into segments to make squares, hexagons, and octagons. When these are turned on a lathe the contrasting woods produce some interesting geometrical patterns. It was then suggested to me that this idea could be used to turn bowls. That sounded like a challenge. As you can see from the Stearman biplane, there are many other interesting woodworking projects you can make. It is a great hobby! |
