Eye of The Sun Vibrant colored spikes radiating on a subtly changing yellow background, make up this large single Mariner’s Compass. The design idea came from a quilt in the Shelburne Museum and was made in a weeklong workshop with Doreen Speckman. My daughter, Jane, suggested its fitting name. It was awarded a first place in the Mississippi Valley Quilt show and was published in the AQS Engagement Calendar, 1998. |

Neptune’s Garden Nine Blocks of 64 point Mariner’s Compass was a challenge to paper piece, one half of which was done on a little Singer Featherweight when I went to stay with my daughter and new granddaughter. These nine identical patterns with a classic flower garland border make a classic nineteenth century setting. I enjoyed using today’s new fabrics and techniques for this old design. · First Place, Professional Pieced, NQA,1996 · Best of Show, Mt.
